Ethics and Legitimacy of Community Engagement, Contemporary Collecting and Co-production in Museums and Heritage

Helen Graham

This broad project, brought together by Helen Graham, drew on two collaborative Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded projects Partnership and Participation: Intellectual Property and Informed Consent and Tackling Ethics Issues in Community-Based Research.

Taken together, the projects enabled active exploration of the ethical and political issues raised by community engagement projects with museum practitioners and participants in community engagement projects.

Through the second of the projects, the questions raised by museum community engagement were located in the broader frame of community-based research. They have led to Ethics Guide and a series of Case Studies and Commentaries and the questions were explored further at the Ethical Challenges in Community-based Participatory Research Conference (Durham University, 28 February 2013).
