Making an Impact: Postgraduate Research Conference

Date
Date
Wednesday 15 June 2016

This free, one-day event will bring together postgraduate students from across all Faculties of the University in order to explore and articulate the impact of their research and how it relates to the concept of ‘cultural value’. Students will be able to connect with postgraduate research students from a large range of disciplines, and to think about how explicitly engaging with ‘impact’ can benefit their future careers in both academia and industry.

The venue for the event is Seminar Room G.13 of the Maurice Keyworth Building, University of Leeds.

The conference will provide opportunities for postgraduate students to:

  • Present your research to a receptive and friendly audience, thereby developing skills in public speaking and communicating academic work
  • Engage in discussions with peers from a wide variety of different disciplines, developing your networks across the University
  • Learn about cultural value in relation to academic research from an expert in the field from our keynote speaker Professor John Holden
  • Consider the policy and impact implications of your research, in particular to ‘look up’ and see the ‘big picture’ in terms of academic work and the cultural context in which it is situated
  • Participate in an ‘impact workshop’ facilitated by the Staff and Department Development Unit (SDDU)
  • Benefit your future career by becoming more aware of the imperative of considering the impact of your academic work in applications to employers and follow-on funding applications

We would like to invite postgraduate students across the University to present for 3-5 minutes on the potential impact and cultural value of your research. Attendance is also encouraged for those not wishing to present.
