Artists of Faith: Works from the Methodist Art Collection

Date

A new exhibition, curated by Nick Cass of the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage, opens at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in May.

Artists of Faith brings together a selection of works from the Methodist Art Collection Museum, including paintings by major British artists including Patrick Heron, Elizabeth Frink and Maggie Hambling. The works will be displayed in the Parsonage for the first time, placing them in a new context and highlighting connections between members of the Brontë family and the Methodist faith.

Exhibition curator, Nick Cass, a Research Associate in the the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds, says of the exhibition:

‘This is a rare opportunity to see these works in the period interior of the museum. The links between the Brontë family and religion are well known, but they specifically had a number of links with Methodism.

‘I am delighted to be curating this. I feel lucky that my PhD research has led to such a great opportunity; the Brontë Parsonage has such an innovative contemporary art programme and it’s lovely to be now creating an exhibition as part of that.’

The exhibition runs from 2 May to 27 June 2014. Further information can be found on the Brontë Parsonage website.
