Join us for presentations from artists and researchers to explore the ways in which contemporary art engages with the heritage experience.

Temple Newsam House has recently commissioned two artists, Diana Beltran Herrera and Paul Ratcliff, and the community organisation People Powered Press to make work in the context of Temple Newsam's celebrations of being in public ownership for 100 years.

Under the title Outside In,  these commissions have been the subject of a small scale, exploratory, visitor study carried out by researchers from the University of Leeds.

Contemporary art commissions in heritage spaces are now a familiar phenomenon. However, this form of commissioning (which often has its roots in audience development) raises questions about how visitors engage with and make sense of the artworks they encounter — given that visitor experiences are the direct result of the aims and agendas of the commissioners and of the artists who made the work.

How artworks affect the atmosphere, or the 'prevailing psychological climate' of historic spaces, is also important in relation to visitor meaning making as the result of the particular qualities of place and embodied experience.

This symposium is a collaboration between the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage at the University of Leeds and Temple Newsam House .

The project has been supported with funding from the Leeds Arts and Humanities Research Institute and the Centre for Practice-Led Research in the Arts .
