Invitation to share welcome lunch with our Brazilian and Mexican artist/activist collaborators.

This event will be informal and welcoming, involving some project information sharing, networking, discovering 'artivist' practice in Brazil; it's an opportunity to create future collaborations, and to find out about an experimental enquiry process, part of an AHRC Connected Communities project based within the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies.

Open to all! Of particular value to people interested in:

  • Socially engaged arts practice
  • 'Artivism'
  • Community engaged research
  • Brazilian/Mexican contexts for creative/arts/activist ('artivista') practice

Venue: Baines Wing, SR G.37, University of Leeds

Background information

For the past 9 months we have been working on an experimental, engaged arts research project, involving artist/activists in Brazil connecting with artist/activists here in the UK. The theme of our enquiry is how we can create spaces of connection that are 'potentised' - catalyse possibilities of change, transformation, action. The picture chain above/below shows moments of connection during an initial residential 'immersion' in a retreat centre outside Sao Paulo, Brazil, in September of last year. We have the corresponding 'immersion' next week here in Yorkshire, at which our six Brazilian and one Mexican visiting collaborators, and 10 artist-activists from here in the UK, will continue the exploration. We are working across many barriers in this project, seeking to learn from the confrontation with different perspectives and experiences by using creativity as the bridge, and using multiple languages and non-linguistic communication to reach each other.
