The ARTiculation Prize: inspiring future art historians and curators

Date

The ARTiculation Prize is an annual event designed to promote the appreciation and discussion of art. Sixth form students are invited to deliver a ten minute presentation to an audience about a work of art, artefact or architecture of their choice. This year nine regional heats take place across eight venues, with the final at the University of Cambridge.

The regional heat at The Hepworth, Wakefield, on Wednesday 12 February will be adjudicated by Abigail Harrison Moore, Programme Director for the MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, University of Leeds.

The ARTiculation Prize in Yorkshire is a collaboration between the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, and the University’s School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, in partnership with the Roche Court Educational Trust.  It offers a unique opportunity for students to explore galleries and to take part in ‘Ways of Seeing’ and ‘The Language of Sculpture’ workshops.

Dr Harrison Moore said of the award:

'I have been involved in the ARTiculation competition for three years, having first been invited to judge the northern heat in Leeds in 2011. The competition is very valuable for introducing a wide range of students to thinking, writing and presenting about art, and it encourages them to develop very valuable skills for university study.

'It forms part of the University of Leeds' work to engage young people in research, develop their interest in art history and fine art, encourage their aspirations and support them in their transition to higher education. It has been great to work with two of our key partners in the region, Leeds Museums and Galleries and the Hepworth Wakefield.  I value the opportunity that ARTiculations gives me to engage with young people and am constantly inspired by listening to (and judging) the presentations.'

The final takes place at Clare College, Cambridge, on Saturday 1 March 2014 (with adjudicator Edmund de Waal OBE).  The BBC Culture Show will be filming at the heats and the final, with a feature on ARTiculation to be televised in March.
