Internship Role: Exhibition Project Intern
Project Title: To assist in the planning, promotion, delivery and evaluation of the exhibition ‘George Morland: In the Margins’

This is an exciting internship opportunity for a University of Leeds undergraduate, with one year of undergraduate study completed in Museum Studies, Fine Art, History or other related subject. The successful Exhibition Project Intern will assist in the planning, promotion, delivery and evaluation of a new exhibition George Morland: In the Margins at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery at the University of Leeds.

Project information
In Spring 2015, the Gallery is organising an exhibition entitled George Morland: In the Margins (17 March-11 July 2015). The exhibition, guest curated by UCL art historian Dr Nick Grindle, looks at migrants and margins in the work of the painter George Morland (1763-1804).

Morland was a popular painter whose lifestyle and early death earned him lasting notoriety. Over 250 of his works are held by public collections in the UK and US alone. His paintings of smugglers, gypsies, pedlars, soldiers, and families, which represent some of his best compositions, as well as how they mirrored his own life, raise compelling questions about who, and where, is ‘marginal’ in society. His pictures resonate with contemporary issues such as migration and marginality in a way that was not evident thirty years ago.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full colour catalogue with new critical essays (by Dr Grindle as well as Leeds academics Dr Kerry Bristol and Dr Martin Purvis) and a one-day symposium is also planned at the University of Leeds during the exhibition run. The exhibition may also tour beyond Leeds to further UK venues (tbc).

The Exhibition Project Intern would learn how to organise a public art exhibition and associated events programme, from its concept to completion. As part of the exhibition preparation, the Exhibition Project Intern would also undertake general research into George Morland, support the catalogue development and production, the display and interpretation of the exhibition as well as support the management of artwork loans and transportation internationally.
