Land art project in the news

Date

A recent land art project created at Addingham Primary School to celebrate the Tour de France has featured in local and regional press.

Dr Abigail Harrison Moore, Head of School for Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, worked with MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies alumna, Nicola Bayntun, and children at Addingham Primary School in West Yorkshire to deliver a massive art project on their school field to celebrate the Grand Départ over the 5 & 6 July 2014. The aim of the project was to complete a work of art that would be seen by the helicopters flying down the Wharfe Valley over the two days of the world's greatest cycle race.

The huge art-work was created in the school's playing field, following a series of creative sessions at the school, led by Abigail and Nicola, which resulted in the creation of the design.  The school were helped out by school gardener, David Burlison, who marked out the large-scale design on the grass prior to the children completing it on the morning of Friday 4 July. The art work involved all of the children, some on their own bicycles, scattering compost containing wild flower seeds so that their design will last more than just the weekend of the Tour. Amazing photographs were taken from the air by aerial photographer, Thomas Bolland, as the children created their work of art on the field below.

Local press covered the story, including the Ilkley Gazette, the Craven Herald, the Telegraph and Argus and the Yorkshire Evening Post. There have been reports that the story was even mentioned as far away as Whitby!
