Why there are so many ‘unnamed’ women in art history? Who are they? Why are their stories not told?

Curated by a group of MA students from the University of Leeds, this exhibition explores the potential stories of 'unnamed' women in art history.

Whether they were perceived as objects for decoration, or not worthy of their own identity, this exhibition explores the consequences of being unnamed.

The curatorial team of MA students retell the imagined stories behind these 'unnamed' women and narrate from their perspective, through a new interpretation of the York Museums Trust collection.

The exhibition aims to consider the issues of gender, identity and social recognition within the field of art. It also aims to provoke critical thinking regarding the long-standing marginalization of women in art history, and the consequences of the constant devaluing of their voices.
